KB Restricting installation of new printer drivers after applying the July 6, updates – Configure the firewall

This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly.

Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: How to back up and restore the registry in Windows. A setting of 0 disables this entry. A setting of 1 restricts printer access to printers in the forest.

A setting of 1 allows printers to appear in the server list dialog box. If your hardware came with a Microsoft Windows x64 edition already installed, your hardware manufacturer provides technical support and assistance for the Windows x64 edition.

In this case, your hardware manufacturer provides support because a Windows x64 edition was included with your hardware. Your hardware manufacturer might have customized the Windows x64 edition installation by using unique components. Unique components might include specific device drivers or might include optional settings to maximize the performance of the hardware.

Microsoft will provide reasonable-effort assistance if you need technical help with a Windows x64 edition. After installing the July and later updates, non-administrators, including delegated admin groups like printer operators, cannot install signed and unsigned printer drivers to a print server. By default, only administrators can install both signed and unsigned printer drivers to a print server. Note Before installing the July Out-of-band and later Windows updates containing protections for CVE, the printer operators’ security group could install both signed and unsigned printer drivers on a printer server.

Starting with the July Out-of-band update, administrator credentials will be required to install signed and unsigned printer drivers on a printer server. Optionally, to override all Point and Print Restrictions Group policy settings and ensure that only administrators can install printer drivers on a print server, configure the RestrictDriverInstallationToAdministrators registry value to 1.

We recommend that you immediately install the latest Windows updates released on or after July 6, on all supported Windows client and server operating systems, starting with devices that currently host the print spooler service. Next, set the “When installing drivers for a new connection” and “When updating drivers for an existing connection” in the Point and Print Restrictions Group Policy setting to “Show warning and elevation prompt”. If both conditions are true, then you are not vulnerable to CVE and no further action is needed.

If either condition is not true, you are vulnerable. Follow the steps below to change the Point and Print Restrictions Group Policy to a secure configuration. Important We strongly recommend that you apply this policy to all machines that host the print spooler service. Restart requirements: This policy change does not require a restart of the device or the print spooler service after applying these settings. Warning Setting these to non-zero values make the devices on which you’ve installed the CVE update vulnerable.

Note Configuring these settings does not disable the Point and Print feature. Updates released July 6, or later have a default of 0 disabled until updates released August 10, For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

Windows 10 firewall blocking Printers from Printer Server

Unless you have a constant influx of new users or a constant change of printers, this is a very small burden. In most cases, users that sit at desks use the same few printers. Set those up once and you’re done. You eliminate the “I printed it but it didn’t come out” user error when they accidentally switch to the wrong printer. You eliminate the “Bill printed a picture of his dog on the check stock I loaded in the printer for payroll” error.

You control who has access to what printer. It depends on how locked down the environment is. Just because a machine is on the domain domain mean that everything is restricted. Running print drivers in user mode space is better from a security standpoint than kernel mode drivers.

Windows have been moving to user mode v4 of the print driver introduced with Windows 8. I know you can control a lot of this stuff with GPO’s, I don’t know the specific ones off hand. I also personally don’t like to deploy USB printers, even if only one user is printing to it I would still rather it be on the network so I have more control over it if needed.

Windows will let users install some things without admin prompts, including printers. It’s a bit annoying but the only way I know of to get around this is to create a GPO to block it. The “Devices: Prevent users from installing printer drivers” security policy can enabled to restrict installing print drivers. Another point to consider. If the driver is already installed on the machine say from a previous user, or another user on that same machine , then no admin credentials are required to install the printer.

This is true for both local and networked printers. To this end, if you are deploying a standard image, and have a standardized printer deployment across your network, you can include the printer drivers in the image so that admin credentials are not required for users to connect to common printers.

You can also push drivers out via GP. Printers and devices will usually only be setup by windows if the drivers are already installed or built in to the windows image.

Users would not be able to install a printer with custom printer drivers without admin rights, but if Windows is already aware of the device it will install it for you. Same as plugging in most usb devices or attaching a monitor. Our main problem as an office equipment dealer is Windows updates replacing the OEM driver with a “class” driver with limited functionality as well as replacing IP ports with wsd which always results in a call and a visit.

In a corporate or enterprise environment, some times it is critical to keep control of what device they can use and where aka – locking you out from a local install. You can make sure they only HAVE one printer saves admin from buying aspirin. You can secure custody of documentation secure print options on certain higher end printers, preventing anyone from seeing the documentation or data before the user is present – think Accounting or HR , etc.

The main reason a business would do this is to control costs and environment on a pay per click machine pay for each print , as monochrome is cheaper than color per page.

So, in summary: Dependent on the environment, “IT” may have to lock out the ability to install even a keyboard or mouse to secure the network and contain costs.
