Can’t Activate Office on Reinstall to same PC – Microsoft Community
The way to tell which license you use is to log into your office. If you are having to call by phone to activate then that means that you have used the same key multiple times. Yes you would want to add all 5 licenses to your account and if you only have 5 licenses you can either buy a 6th or deactivate to be compliant.
So I assume not volume licensing or through Office, which actually have some mechanisms to prevent this. In which case, although you might be able to activate a key on 2 computers simultaneously, you are still bound by the UELA that prohibits you from doing this.
So while technically you can do it, legally you can not. Run some software to scan for license keys from computers on your network. This is one of the reasons why OEM licensing is such a pain. Now, when I checked for the product key, I found 2 product keys registered are different to which I have used to install previously or different from what I bought.
Brand Representative for Microsoft. If you are dealing with OEM then you might have pre installed copies of Office that came with your computer purchase. You might consider uninstalling all the Office applications and then reinstalling just Office again new and get a single key on the inventory list. As for the phone activation you are getting that prompt because you have reached your install limit and Microsoft needs to be sure you really have only 5 installed copies.
As far as I know OEM license once activated on a machine is not portable so you would be required by the EULA to purchase a new copy for the 6th machine. Volume licensing is more flexible and is what I and most SpiceHeads would recommend for any future purchases. The only thing I wanted to do is, install office in 5 machines.
I have wiped the PCs and then started freshly, so not sure why the previous version of office is still there. The issue here is, I cant check which licence I have put, and online office login gives me different licence which I dint purchase That’s a different issue altogether, but I’m not sure what you mean.
If you wiped the machines then everything needs to be reinstalled. Outlook connects to a server of some sort for email – you shouldn’t need to change anything on the server, if that’s what you’re asking. I now feel, microsoft somehow creating traps to fall I mean there should not have been any phone activation. I understand that, but I cannot bring up outlook unless going to each user for their password while configuring them I mean, its not end of the world for 5 users..
I had all 5 machines which had win xp and office running on them, now I have no idea of that licences as no one kept track before I joined.
Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. How can I deactivate my account on my old computer when the hard drive is gone, dead, flatlined? Good grief!!!!! Big deal. Now I can get the latest updates. Office hasn’t changed since version What we get are goo gahs for idiots who use Office from mobile devises. No you don’t have to rent you don’t buy it! Office to get updates. Yes, Office help files are pretty much useless. MS has essentially abandoned them for the internet. But they have not bothered to provide fully up to date replacement information there either Basically, you have to google to find help from any source that may have it.
MS does have a lot of help and training type information articles, but trying to find them is a real challenge. They are NOT collected in one place or indexed in any useful way. If you read the MS License Terms for Office you will NOT find any limit on the number of times you can download and re-install on the same computer that is what I understand you are doing after hardware problems. But MS is overly sensitive to it’s bottom line so it has recently introduced this “too many downloads” message nonsense.
It has also introduced a “phone activation no longer supported” message that is a flat out lie that has not been corrected for months now. You are having “activation” issues. So you are going to have to contact the activation support desk. Learn More ». Aaron Jul 20, at UTC. Check out this thread and comments. A couple different things to try.

I had no idea there was a limit on this. The key has only been used on one machine but I’ve rebuilt it enough times that I must have hit my limit. Is there a way to fix this or is my key dead? Jul 6, 5, Call Microsoft.

Sounds like you used up the of activations for that license and the Activation rep may not have understood what you were needing. They should be able to help you reactivate Office given your scenario. Can you verify the you called? Maybe try: We already explained the situation, they insist we reach the activation limit. Since we activated all in these very two Ultrabooks, what’s the issue?
Thanks Chris Microsoft! I agree, I don’t understand why they are telling you otherwise..! I would call back and explain your situation to another rep. Maybe the one you got was having a bad day.
The EULA restric the transfer of the license from one computer to another, you can’t transfer the license more than one time each 90 days. Except in Hardware Failure. In that case, reactivation in the same device does not apply as “transfer”, since the device is the same. I didn’t abandoned this thread. Very much depends on from whom you purchased your office.
